Devoto prison

The Devoto prison, currently named "Complejo Penitenciario Federal de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires", may house 1811 inmates. It was built in 1927 as a prison for petty thieves, and was managed by the federal police. There was a prison riot in 1978, the "Motín de los colchones", which ended with 60 to 65 deaths and 85 injuries.
President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced in 2011 that the prison would be closed, and the prisoners moved to a new one located in Mercedes, Buenos Aires. As of 2016, the works only advanced an 8%. It was announced then that the work would be restarted, and scheduled to finish in 2018. The prison in Mercedes was dropped in 2018, and a new one in Marcos Paz, Buenos Aires was announced instead.
