Districts of Albania


Districts were geographic subdivisions of Albania that functioned from 1913-2000. Between 1991 and 2000 Albania was divided into 36 districts, which were grouped into 12 prefectures or counties.
In 2000, with Law No. 8653, dated 31.07.2000, districts were abolished as administrative units, being replaced by counties as second level of administrative division.

History

During the 1920s Albania had 39 districts and then 26 in 1939. From 1959 to 1991 Albania was organized into 26 districts. In 1991 ten more districts were added: Bulqizë, Delvinë, Devoll, Has, Kavajë, Kuçovë, Kurbin, Malësi e Madhe, Mallakastër and Peqin. In 1978, Ersekë District was renamed to Kolonjë. In 2000, districts became defunct and were replaced by counties.
