Doraemon in India


Doraemon is an anime series, originally a manga authored by Fujiko F. Fujio in 1969 in Japan. The Doraemon franchise came to India on February 13, 2005 when the anime aired for the first time on Hungama TV. It has won the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards India two times in a row for Best Show For Kids and was nominated in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 edition for the same category. It is the most successful Japanese anime in India. It is the highest rated kids' show with more than 100 million+ viewers. The anime series is currently being aired on Disney Channel and streams on Disney+ Hotstar.

History

Anime (1979 series and 2005 series)

The anime has been airing on Hungama TV since 13 February 2005 which was the introduction of the Doraemon franchise in India. Since 19 November 2010, Hungama TV's sister channel, Disney Channel India, has been rerunning the old dubbed Doraemon episodes which have already been broadcast by Hungama TV.
Disney India dubbed episodes starting with the Doraemon series. Later episodes of the Doraemon series started airing on Hungama TV and Disney Channel India, starting in October and November 2013 as New Doraemon. Several episodes of the 1979 anime version were represented again under the title Classic Doraemon on Disney Channel in January 2017. Since 1 January 2018, Hungama TV has stopped airing Doraemon episodes and is now exclusively aired on Disney Channel. However, Hungama TV has been airing the 2019 Indian dubbed releases of Doraemon movies right after its premiere on Disney Channel.
In November 2016 Amazon Prime India signed a deal with TV Asahi to stream various anime series including Doraemon exclusively in India. In 2020 Doraemon also started streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

Movies

Since 2010, there have been a total of twenty-eight Doraemon movies that have been released in India; two of which received theatrical releases, while the remaining were TV Premieres on either Disney Channel India or Hungama TV.
