Fanas is first mentioned in second half of the 12th Century as Phanaunes.

Fanas has an area,, of. Of this area, 45% is used for agricultural purposes, while 36.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.7% is settled and the remainder is non-productive. The municipality is located in the Seewis sub-district of the Prättigau/Davos district on a terrace between Grüsch and Schiers. It consists of the linear village of Fanas.
