Farook is of Tamil and Valluvanadan ancestry and was raised in a Rowther Muslim trading class environment. His family settled in Chittur as his father traded agriculture produces in Malabar along the West Coast of India, where Farook attended Seri Sahib Memorial High School at Thathamangalam, and completed his Bachelor in Commerce at Chittur Government College, Palakkad affiliated with the University of Calicut, though his interest was always in fine arts.

Career

He started his professional career in Television films at the age of 18 as Assistant Director on Dooradarshan Malayalam television film "Nangema kutty" and then assisted the legendary Malayalam Director P.N. Menon in his television film "Ethalukal"-Petals. Later produced Malayalam Television Films "Sthree Parvam" and "Kulam"-Clan. The iconoclastic life of the poet P. Kunhiraman Nair and his works that adored the beauty of ‘Valluvanadan’ Kerala remain an inspiration for many Keralites even now. Farook Abdul Rahiman who was brought up in the culturally vibrant Palakkad where P. Kunhiraman Nair lived a majority of his life, was no different. Having perused majority of the works of the poet from his childhood, it was an aspiration for the television filmmaker to helm a movie based on him. And the result of the twelve-year-long toil was "Kaliyachan"- The Master of the Play, that bagged Farook many laurels including the Kerala State Award for the best debutant director
