Force Criminal Investigations Department


Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department abbreviated as is the highest level and arm in the investigating department of the Nigerian Police Force. It is currently headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Nigeria Police Anthony Ogbizi under the supervision of the IGP.

History

The FCIID was established by the Nigerian Government in 1951 after it developed gradually from the Criminals and Investigation Department. The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department was first established in the Lagos State Police Command in the Colonial Administration in 1898 before Nigeria gained independence.

Functions

Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department serves as a branch in the Nigeria Police Force that oversees the investigation and prosecution of complex criminal cases within and outside the jurisdiction of Nigeria. The department is also responsible for investigating offenses and escalated violence caused by sectional police squad. The FCIID is known to be an intervention team used by the Inspector General of Police to carry out investigations of serious crimes by Lawmakers, political officeholders, law enforcement officers and others.

Controversy

[NITEL] land dispute

On 17 February 2020, the FCIID was accused of perversion of justice after the criminal investigation unit in Ikoyi had allegedly acted against evidence presented that the officers of the FCIID took sides with the suspect even after receiving a court order. The FCIID acted against the family embroiled in a land dispute after defunct relinquished over 20 acres of land following its liquidation.
