Foreign relations of Romania


The foreign relations of Romania are conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Romania is a member of NATO and the European Union.

Romania joined the European Union on January 1, 2007. Romania also declared its public support for Turkey and Croatia joining the European Union. Romania shares a privileged economic relation with Turkey.

Austria was the first country who recognized Romania's independence from Turkey. The relations were suspended on August 27, 1916 when Romania declared war on Austria-Hungary, entering the First World War. On August 27, 1920, the diplomatic relations were resumed, this time with Austria proper, due to the dissolution of the Austria-Hungary Empire. On April 5, 1938 relations were suspended again, few days before the annexation of Austria by Germany. Relations resumed on October 8, 1947, two years after Austria's secession from Germany.
