Fort Canning MRT station

Fort Canning MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit station on the Downtown Line, located on the boundary of Museum and Singapore River planning areas, Singapore. Located at the foot of Fort Canning on the northern bank of the Singapore River, this station is in close proximity to Liang Court, UE Square and Clarke Quay.

History

The Contract 937 for the design and construction of River Valley MRT Station and associated tunnels was awarded to GS Engineering & Construction Corp. at a contract sum of S$255.05 million in July 2011. Construction of these stations and tunnels started on that month and completed on schedule in 2017.
Several engineering feats were achieved with the construction of the Fort Canning station, including the diversion of part of the Singapore River. The tunnel linking the Fort Canning and Bencoolen stations is also just one metre above the North East Line, the closest two lines have ever run in Singapore. In 2016, it was recognised by the Institution of Engineers Singapore as one of the top 50 engineering achievements here since 1965.
The station opened on 21 October 2017, as part of the third stage of the line to Expo.

Architecture

The station's design features many green motifs, giving it a natural feel, reflecting the adjacent Fort Canning Park. It also has patterns etched into its walls that are reminiscent of the former National Theatre that once stood near the station site.
