He was

Alfred Ely
Beach. He graduated from Yale's
Sheffield Scientific School
in
1868
.

1896
he became a
director
of the Scientific
American
. In 1889 he was the editor of
American Photography
. From 1902 he was
editor in chief
of the
Encyclopedia
Americana
.
He died on
June 18
, 1918, in
Stamford, Connecticut
.
