GS25


GS25 is a South Korean convenience store chain operated and owned by GS Retail, a subsidiary company of the GS Group. GS25 is obviously NO.1 convenience store chain. This company that is loved by customers to the extent that it has been ranked No.1 for 8 years in a reliable evaluation called KS-SQI.

History

GS25, then known as LG25, opened their first store in Hoegi-dong, Seoul in 1990. However in 2005, when the GS Group split from the LG Group, the name of LG25 was correspondingly changed to GS25. Since 2014, GS25 convenience stores can be found with GS Caltex gas stations. In March 2019, GS25 changed their brand identity for the first time since changing their name to GS25. The new slogan "Lifestyle Platform" is being applied on all new store signs. However, most stores still use the old store sign as of August 2019. Currently, GS25 has 13,107 stores in South Korea.

Products

GS25 has almost every food product ranging from instant food and vegetables to fruits, and other ingredients. Consequently, various groups of people utilize GS25. Housewives often purchase ingredients from GS25, students buy snacks to eat, and workers get instant food. GS also sells things for gifts such as meat, wine, healthy food, and kitchen utensils. People can send gifts to others by using the GS25 website. Especially HMR foods are a big boom in Korea, and GS25 also deals with them. Their HMR food sales increased surprisingly in 2018, recording 86% growth compared to 2017.

Strategy

One new method has been to sell lunch boxes in convenience stores. This method has been quite successful. Various new kinds of lunch boxes continue to be created. GS25 has seen lunch box styles increase by over 50 percent this year.
Another new method has been to install copy and fax machines within their stores. GS25 has pursued this to catch a demographic missed by 7-11, namely, people who seek amenities and easy access to useful machines.
Lastly, GS25 has started to offer more discounts and introduced apps to make shopping more convenient. For example, GS25 usually has a “buy one, get one free” sale that plays a big role in raising earnings.
