Gary Chaloner


Gary Chaloner is an Australian comic book artist and writer. He began self publishing in 1985 with David de Vries, Glenn Lumsden and Tad Pietrzykowski under the Cyclone Comics imprint. He has collaborated with Ashley Wood, Ben Templesmith, Kurt Busiek, Stephen Jewell and Tim Byrd. He is the writer/artist of Will Eisner's John Law, Robert E. Howard's comedy western character, Breckinridge Elkins, Red Kelso, The Jackaroo, Flash Damingo, The Undertaker Morton Stone and "Planet of the Apes: Urchak's Folly". He has also worked for Marvel Comics, DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics in the United States.
In 2002, he worked with Will Eisner to develop new stories featuring the Eisner creations John Law, Lady Luck and Mr. Mystic. These stories were first published online and then were published in 2004 by IDW Publishing.
In 2005, he inaugurated the Ledger Awards, Australian comic book awards that 'acknowledge excellence and achievement in Australian comic arts and publishing'.
Other projects of note include Unmasked and Kurt Busiek's Astro City.
His current projects include Doc Wilde, Cyclone Force, and Proud Heart, The Love of Achilles.
He was the 2017 recipient of the Jim Russell Award, made to the individual or organization who in the opinion of the Australian Cartoonists' Association Board has made a significant contribution to Australian cartooning.
He resides in Tasmania, Australia.
