Gay romance
Gay romance is a genre of romance fiction focused on main characters, typically male, who are in a homosexual or homo-romantic relationship.
The category ranges from young adult fiction to erotica, across contemporary, historical fiction, and speculative fiction. Some of the sub-niche categories are coming out, "gay-for-you", "first-time gay", and mainstream-style love stories in which men find their happily-ever-after with other men.
Traditionally written by and for gay men, the majority of gay romance novels marketed in the past ten years as M/M Romance has been written by and for women. There is an disproportionate number of female authors in M/M Romance, with more than half of the titles on Amazon's current best-selling list written by women.
In 2019, Romance Writers of America accepted , a chapter for LGBTQIA+ romance fiction. Since January 2010, M/M Romance has increased in popularity, with the genre's stock tripling in Amazon's online Kindle Store. Additionally, M/M Romance novels are now hitting mainstream best-seller lists.
