George Fenner (soldier)
George Fenner was an American soldier who achieved fame for raising the American flag over Mexico City after it fell to American forces at the end of the Mexican–American War. When Mexico was defeated, Fenner was one of a dozen men selected to hoist the flag above the fallen city. He was the last survivor of this group.
George was a resident of Bucyrus, Ohio for fifty years. He was born in Pennsylvania and served throughout the Mexican–American War.
Fenner was a contractor. He built many of the older buildings in Bucyrus and neighboring cities.
He died suddenly on October 10, 1900, when he "dropped dead" whilst eating his favorite bratwurst on a Bucyrus street.
