During an interview with V, Cyrus and producer Pharrell Williams revealed that they considered servicing "#GetItRight" as the lead single from the record, though "We Can't Stop" was ultimately chosen. "#GetItRight" is a pop-funk song; it was written and produced by Pharrell Williams. According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Kobalt Music Publishing America, the track is written in the key of F major with a tempo of 116 beats per minute. Mariah Eakin of The A.V. Club noted the incorporation of "whistling choruses and whimsical sing-alongs", while Nick Catucci from Entertainment Weekly recognized the use of a "scratchy funk guitar"; he further stated that the lyrics "Would you believe I'm dancing in the mirror? / I feel like I got no panties on / I wish that I could feel ya / Now hurry, hang up that damn phone!'" address the desire of an "absent lover". Evan Sawdey of PopMatters felt that its production was similar to that of "Starships" by Nicki Minaj.
Critical reception
Upon its release, "#GetItRight" received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who appreciated its overall production. Mariah Eakin from The A.V. Club complimented its placement on Bangerz, describing the song as "perfectly appropriate for an early-twentysomething, albeit one who has no problem with nudity." Nick Catucci of Entertainment Weekly opined that the track is "every bit as immodest as you'd expect from a young lady who recently spawned a craze for swinging unattired on public pendulums", and further commented that it "solved the riddle what the grinning naked women in Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' video were thinking". Writing for Slant Magazine, Kyle Fowler appreciated "#GetItRight" for being a "sexy slice of pop-funk whose lyrics boast a raunchy but refreshing display of female sexual agency". Mark Jacobs from V described the track as "a sure Top 40 diamond with a whistling hook and clever sweetness that partially obscures the frank sexual nature of its lyrics." However, Heather Phares from AllMusic gave a more mixed review of "#GetItRight", suggesting that it is "so bouncy it almost sounds innocent despite Miley's insistence that she wants to be naughty." Evan Sawdey felt that the song was "catchy but flat", while Jessica Hopper of Spin thought that Cyrus came across as "powerless and horny".
Live performances
On December 6, 2013, Cyrus performed "#GetItRight", along with her previous singles "We Can't Stop" and "Party in the U.S.A.", and a cover version of "Summertime Sadness" by Lana Del Rey at the KIIS-FM Jingle Ball concert in Los Angeles. The performance garnered media attention after Cyrus twerked on a dancer dressed as Santa Claus, portrayed by her friend Cheyne Thomas. She also performed "#GetItRight", along with "Wrecking Ball", on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest in Times Square on December 31. An episode of MTV Unplugged starring Cyrus premiered through MTV on January 29, 2014; she performed an acoustic version of "#GetItRight", among several additional tracks from Bangerz. Cyrus has also performed the song during her ongoing Bangerz Tour. The performance received positive reviews from critics. During the performance, Cyrus wore a bodysuit heavily encrusted with red and silver rhinestones designed by "The Blonds" with an open shirt with matching maribou feathers and red boots. The performance featured Cyrus on a large blue and pink bed out of which male and female dancers came out from underneath.
