Glenys Hanna Martin


Glenys Hanna Martin was born in Nassau on October 27, 1958 to the Hon. Arthur Dion Hanna and Beryl Hanna. She is the mother of three and grandmother of two.
Her education began at St. Anne's School, Fox Hill. She later attended Queen's College, and matriculated from Padworth College, Reading, England. She continued her studies at York University, Toronto, Ontario, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature. In 1985 she left for the University of Buckingham, England where she obtained her LL.B with top honours having been awarded the Maxwell Law Prize by the institution. She then joined the Inner Temple, London and in 1988, after having successfully completed her Council of Legal Education Course, was called to the Bar of England and Wales, and The Bahamas bar.
In 1998, she was elected Chairperson of the Women's Branch of the Progressive Liberal Party. Then in 2008, was elected Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party at its National Convention, becoming the first female to hold the post of Chairman of any major political party in The Bahamas.
Glenys Hanna Martin is a 3-time PLP member of parliament for the Englerston Constituency, having first won the seat in the 2002 General Elections. That same year she was appointed to the Cabinet of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas as Minister of Transport and Aviation. In 2012, when the Progressive Liberal Party was again elected to government, she was again appointed Minister of Transport and Aviation. Glenys Hanna Martin previously served as Chair of the Bahamas Branch and immediate past Regional Representative of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Women's Association.
Now in her fourth term as a Parliamentarian being the only PLP candidate to win a seat in New Providence in the last General Election. She is now the longest serving female Parliamentarian in the Party's history. She has currently announced as a candidate for the post of Leader of the Progressive Liberal Party being the first woman ever in the Party's history to vie for this post.

Glenys Hanna Martin was born in Nassau on October 27, 1958 to the Arthur Dion Hanna and Beryl Church Hanna. She was married to Leon 'Onni' Martin for thirty years until his death in 2013.

Career

Hanna Martin was elected to the Bahamian Parliament from Englerston in 2002. When Hanna Martin was elected Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party in 2008, she became the first women to hold the position of Chairman of a political party in The Bahamas. She became the Minister of Transport and Aviation of The Bahamas in 2012.
