Halicharan Narzary


Halicharan Narzary is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a left winger for the Indian club Hyderabad FC and India national football team.

Career

Youth career

Narzary first started playing football in his village of Kokrajhar, Assam, where he represented his school team. After impressing in the school leagues, he was called to attend a trial at a SAI hostel nearby. Having made the cut there, he went on to represent Assam at the U-16 National Championships in Mahilpur. His talent was spotted by scouts at the tournament, and he earned a call up to the India U16 squad from where he graduated to the India U19 team.

Pailan Arrows

Narzary joined Pailan Arrows, then AIFF XI, for the 2010–11 I-League season. Narzary made his professional debut on 15 May 2011 against eventual league champions Salgaocar, coming on as a substitute before netting in his first goal at professional level in the same match but could not prevent the Arrows from losing 1–3.
During the 2011-12 I-League season Narzary was not considered in the plans of the new coaches of Pailan Arrows, Sukhwinder Singh and Sujit Chakravarty and he only made seven I-League appearances and did not appear in the 2011 Federation Cup, however in Pailan's first match of the 2012–13 season, Narzary scored against Delhi United that led Pailan to a 2–2 draw in the 2012 Durand Cup.
Narzary started the 2012-13 I-League season in the 2012 Federation Cup against Dempo on 19 September 2012, scoring a goal to give Pailan Arrows the lead in the 52nd minute, however the match ended 1–1 after Clifford Miranda scored the equalizer in the 60th minute. Narzary then scored his second goal of the tournament against Shillong Lajong on 23 September 2012 in the 17th minute as Pailan Arrows won 2–1 but were still knocked-out of the cup on points.
Narzary then scored his first two goals in the I-League in two seasons in the first round of the season against Mumbai with a brace on 6 October 2012 in the 34th and 76th minutes of the match at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata to help Pailan to an opening day win by a score of 3–2. Narzary scored another goal in the next match against Air India at the Salt Lake Stadium on 11 October 2012 in the 41st minute to help Pailan Arrows win 2–1. Narzary did not score again however till 1 December 2012 against ONGC when he scored a goal for Pailan Arrows in the 25th minute which would eventually lead to Pailan Arrows to a 4–1 win.
On 6 April 2013 he scored against Dempo at Tilak Maidan Stadium on the 2nd minute from a Pritam Kotal cross to help the Arrows upset the defending champions 2–0.

Dempo

On 26 October 2013 it was confirmed that Narzary has signed for Dempo on loan from IMG Reliance with three other players Alwyn George, Pronay Halder and Narayan Das. He made his debut for Dempo in the I-League on 1 November 2013 against Mohun Bagan at the Duler Stadium in which he came on as a substitute for Myron Fernandes in the 55th minute as Dempo drew the match 0–0.
Narzary represented FC Goa during the 2014 ISL

NorthEast United FC

Narzary was drafted by NorthEast United FC to play in the 2015 Indian Super League season.

DSK Shivajians

On 15 December 2016, Narzary signed with I-League side DSK Shivajians. He went on to score 4 goals in 12 games throughout the season.

Kerala Blasters

Ahead of the 2018-19 season, Narzary signed for Indian Super League club Kerala Blasters. In his first season, he made 12 appearances and scored 1 goal along with 1 assist. He got loaned out halfway through his first season to Chennaiyin FC. He returned to Kerala for the 2019-20 season, and on January 12th 2020, he scored the winning goal against one of Kerala's biggest rivals ATK as the game finished 1-0 in favor of Kerala. He finished his 2nd season with Kerala having scored 1 goal and gotten 2 assists while the Blasters failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Chennaiyin FC

In January 2019, Narzary signed for ISL club Chennaiyin FC on loan from Kerala Blasters for the rest of the season. In total, he made 3 appearances in the ISL and AFC Cup. The loan spell was considered unsuccessful, and he returned back to Kerala at the end of the season.

International

Narzary made his debut for the India U19s on 31 October 2011 against Turkmenistan U19 in which India U19s won 3–1. He then made his debut for the India U23s on 25 June 2012 coming on as a 39th-minute substitute for Jeje Lalpekhlua against Iraq U23 in which India U23 lost 2–1.
He made his debut as an injury time substitute in for senior Indian team on 12 March 2015 against Nepal in a 2-0 win at Guwahati.
Narzary then made his second appearance for Indian U23 debut against Uzbekistan U23 on 27 March 2015 in a 2016 AFC U-23 qualifier in the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Bangladesh. He made his 3rd appearance against Maldives in saff cup semifinal and assisted the goals for Chhetri and Jeje.
He also represented India in the AFC Asian Cup 2019. He played in all 3 group stage games and got 1 assist, as India suffered a shock group-stage exit.

On 2 October 2019, Halicharan Narzary married Geetanjali Deori of Barpeta as per Bodo tradition at Batabari village in Kokrajhar district of Assam.
