Haro Wine Festival


Haro Wine Festival is a summer festival in the town of Haro in the La Rioja region of Northern Spain. It features a Batalla de Vino and youth bullfights.
The Wine Festival takes place on June 29, the day of the patron saint San Pedro. The day begins at 9:00 am, with a procession of people of all ages carrying jugs, bottles, botas and other types of containers filled with red wine. Led by the town mayor on horseback, the procession winds through Haro to the Cliffs of Bilibio. A mass is then celebrated at the Hermitage of San Felices de Bilibio.
After the mass, the Battle of Wine commences. The participants toss wine on each other until everyone is completely soaked At noon, the festival continues at the Plaza de la Paz in Haro. The festival offers "bullfights" for youth in the town bullring. However, the "bulls" are actually heifers and no animals are killed.
