Haz, Yemen


Haz is a village in western central Yemen. It is located in the San‘a’ Governorate.
Prior to 1948 there were approximately 120 Yemenite Jewish families residing outside of the city walls. The Jewish community consisted of families Najjar, Imran, Wahab, Karni, Yithak, and Yakoob. Their occupations were mainly carpentry, leather tanning, and pottery. Three Baladi Synagogues served them.The Jews in this village lived outside the walled area which housed the local Muslim population. In their area, there were 3 synagogues, divided by family, and also pools for swimming and ritual cleansing.
Water came from a water source called Sayali, which was nearby.]
