Henry Steers (1832)
Henry Steers son of James Rich Steers, nephew of George Steers, proprietor of Henry Steers' Ship Yard.
Educated in New-York, admission into a free Academy. At the age of 16, he worked in the ship yard George & James R. Steers. He served as a regular apprenticeship from a grindstone boy to a foreman.
In 1857, he commenced business on his own account, first building several yachts and pilot boats, including the Charles H. Marshall.
In 1859, he located himself at Greenpoint. He built the Hu Quang, the Che Kiang and the Foh Kein in the China trade.
In 1865, he launched the Arizona for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.
