The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.99. The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.50% African American, 0.37% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population. There were 303 households, out of which 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.0% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.08. In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males.
High school athletics
Hinton's high school mascot is the Blackhawk, presumably after Ioway Indian tribal leaderChief Black Hawk. The school's basketball team compete in the War Eagle Conference, with the girls' basketball team making state playoff appearances in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2009. The boys' and girls' golf teams both made state appearances in 2006 & 2007, with the boys winning 1st place overall in 2006. The school's cross country team has sent a runner to the state meet five times, most recently in 2010, 2011, and 2012. The football team has also seen recent success, reaching the state playoffs 5 times including state runner-up in 2012. The boys' track team recently won the 2012 1A district championship, the school's first.
