History of Terengganu FA


Terengganu Football Association was founded in 1972 as Terengganu Football Association but records show this football association already existed as early as 1944. The team is based in the state of Terengganu, traditionally a conservative Muslim area. Terengganu have consistently been a decent team throughout their history, producing top-class national team players such as Sapian Wahid, Abdul Rahman Ibrahim and Ariffin Osman.

Terengganu FA Era (1944-2018)

Early years (1944-1999)

Terengganu were runners-up in Division 1, the team was runners-up in 1944 season. In the 1973, 1982, 1998 Malaysia Cup and 1999 FA Cup season, the team were runners-up.
In Division 2, Terengganu wons its first title in the 1990 season and the second title in 1998 season.

Che Mat Jusoh years (1999-2013)

In 1999, Dato' Haji Che Mat bin Jusoh, who was the Terengganu President at that time, was appointed to lead the team. In the 2000 season, the team was won first title of FA Cup. The 2001 season was champions Malaysia Cup and won first title in the Malaysia Charity Shield.
In 2004 season, Terengganu was runners-up in the FA Cup lost to Perak 3–0.
The team succeed to improve position in 2005–06 Premier League season. The team ended in runners-up place during the season.
In 2010 season, Terengganu ended in third place in Super League.
In 2011 season, the team was Super League runners-up in league. Terengganu won its second champions in the FA Cup and runners-up in Malaysia Cup.
At the end of the 2013 season, Dato' Haji Che Mat bin Jusoh eventually withdrew from the presidency Terengganu FA after failed to bring the team as required by Peteh fans.

Wan Ahmad Nizam (2013-2016)

PBSNT elect a new president of Terengganu FA, Datuk Wan Ahmad Nizam for renew 'Skuad Peteh for season 2014.
Under his leadership, Terengganu FA were in the top 4 of the league for 2014 and 2015 of Malaysia Super League seasons.
After the poor performance shown by Terengganu FA at the 2016 Malaysia Super League season and relegated to the 2017 Malaysia Premier League, Datuk Wan Ahmad Nizam resign his position as the president of Terengganu FA.

Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman (2016-2018)

In December 2016, Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman, who held the post of Terengganu Menteri Besar, were elected as the new president of Terengganu FA at the extraordinary PBSNT congress for the 2017 to 2020 term, replacing former president Datuk Ahmad Ahmad Nizam Wan Abdul Hamid who resigned.
Under his leadership, Terengganu FA were the runner-up for the 2017 Malaysia Premier League and earned back promotion to the 2018 Malaysia Super League. At the end of 2017, he made a restructuring move on the Terengganu football system based on Johor Darul Ta'zim F.C. and Johor Football Association football system by merging Terengganu FA, T-Team FC and Terengganu FA President and Youth into one entity as Terengganu FC. T-Team FC and Terengganu FA President and Youth were rebranded as Terengganu FC II, Terengganu FC III and Terengganu FC IV and will be a feeder team and development team for Terengganu FC.
On 7 July 2018, Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman resign his position as the president of Terengganu FA to make way for the new Terengganu Menteri Besar, Dato' Seri Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. Dato' Seri Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar were elected as the new president of Terengganu FA on 8 July 2018 and continue his predecessor work to develop Terengganu football.

Malaysia League

[Malaysia FA Cup]

In the 2000 Malaysia FA Cup, Yunus Alif successfully lead Terengganu FA won their first Malaysia FA Cup. In the final, Terengganu FA were held 1–1 draw against Penang and has won through 4-3 penalty shoot-out.
Terengganu won their second FA Cup title during 2011 Malaysia FA Cup in the East Coast Derby match. They beat Super League side Kelantan with a 2–1 victory. Left wing Kelantan, Nurul Azwan Roya scored the first goal of the match in the 79th minute. In injury time, defender Kelantan, Daudsu Jamaluddin has scored an own goal in 90+8th minutes. Nordin Alias became the hero for the team Terengganu. He scored goals a golden goal in Extra time, 110th minute.
In 2012 season, Terengganu only qualified for semi finals after losing to Sime Darby agg 1–2. At Kuala Terengganu, Sime Darby won the first leg 2–1. In the second leg the result was 0–0.
In 2013 season, the team also emulate last season. Sang Penyu lost in semi final to Kelantan. At Kota Bharu, Kelantan won the match 4–1. At Kuala Terengganu, Sang Penyu successful come back in front beat Kelantan 4–0, but the result is only 90 minute. Kelantan equalized through Obinna Nwaneri. Dickson Nwakaeme became the hero for the team Kelantan. He scored goals a golden goal in Extra time, 129th minute. Kelantan qualified for the final with a 6–5 aggregate results.

[Malaysia Cup]

During the Malaysia Cup, Terengganu lost to Negeri Sembilan during the final match that was held at Shah Alam Stadium. In the quarter-finals, Terengganu overcame their rival, Kelantan. In the semi finals, Selangor also become prey to Sang Penyu when beaten 2–0 at home by two goals by Manaf Mamat. While in the second leg, Terengganu won 2-1.
In the final, Terengganu opened the scoring with Ashaari Shamsuddin in the 59th minute. In the 81st minute, N. Sembilan equalized through S. Kunalan. But, Hairuddin Omar disappointed Terengganu with his bicycle kick in the 86th minute. Terengganu lost to N. Sembilan 1–2.
During the Malaysia Cup "Semi-Final 2018", Johor Darul Ta'zim F.C. lost to Terengganu FA with.
In Final, Terengganu FA will face their old rival in Final 1998 and 2001, Perak TBG F.C. at Stadium Shah Alam in 27/10/2018.

Terengganu FA qualified for the 2012 AFC Cup for the first time after winning the 2011 Malaysia FA Cup, which offer a direct slot to the group stage. It is Terengganu FA first appearance in a continental competition. Terengganu FA were place in Group F alongside 2010–11 Hong Kong First Division League champion Kitchee SC, 2011 V-League champions Sông Lam Nghệ An and 2011 S.League champions Tampines Rovers FC.

Sponsorship

For season running from 1984 to 2003, Dunhill was club's first shirt sponsor. However, it ended after tobacco sponsorship was banned in Malaysian football. Malaysia's telco, TM is the new shirt sponsors from season 2004 to 2010. In 2011 season, the main sponsors are Top-IT.
The club's kit manufacturer in 2008 was Pronic which lasted for a year. In 2009, Specs a manufacturer took charge. In 2014, the club's kit manufacturer is Umbro.
Terengganu FA are currently based at Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. The capacity of the stadium is 15,000. This has been Terengganu FA's ground until now. The Stadium was built in 1967 and aims to provide a venue for sports activities from Terengganu, especially as a soccer field. It was built on the site of a football field of Terengganu Football Association.
