Holmes, Caldwell County, Texas

Holmes is a ghost town in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It stands southeast of the current junction of Farm to Market Road 20 and the West Fork of Plum Creek in the central portion of the county.

History

The settlement was named for a man named J.P. Holmes, who established and ran a general store in the area at the time it was a community around 1900. A post office was established at Holmes in 1899, but it only lasted for a few years, closing in 1903. Three years later, a school operated in the settlement. It had 25 residents in 1915. Despite the improvement of county roads, the community was abandoned and residents moved to the nearby city of Lockhart. The ghost town has never been shown on county highway maps since 1984.
