Huasco Province


Huasco Province is one of three provinces of the northern Chilean region of Atacama. Vallenar is the capital city.

Geography and demography

According to the 2012 census by the National Statistics Institute, the province spans an area of and had a population of 72,145, giving it a population density of. The province had a 2002 population of 66,491 Of these, 53,664 lived in urban areas and 12,827 in rural areas. Between the 1992 and 2002 censuses, the population grew by 2.7%.

Administration

As a province, Huasco is a second-level administrative division of Chile, which is further divided into four communes. The province is administered by a presidentially appointed governor. Patricio Urquieta Garcia was appointed by president Sebastián Piñera.
