A post office called Hunters has been in operation since 1884. The community has the name of James Hunter, a pioneer settler.Demographics

The racial makeup of the community was 87.6% White, 0.3% African American, 4.6% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 2.0% from other races, and 4.9% from two or more races. Even though the community is not incorporated as a town, it serves as a focal point of the surrounding smaller communities. These communities include Cedonia, Washington, Bissel, Gifford, and Daisy to the north and Fruitland and Enterprise to the south. Hunters provides schooling at Columbia High School as well as a county shop for the servicing of the local roads.
