The Ilion Typewriters first began play as members of the 1901 Class CNew York State League. Illion would play four seasons in the New YorkState League before folding. The "Typewriters" moniker was likely a reference to local industry, as E. Remington and Sons, founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington, was located in Ilion, New York and known for manufacturing the first commercial typewriter. Beginning play in 1901 as members of the eight–team Class C New York State League, the Ilion Typewriters finished their first professional season with a record of 23–82. Ilion finished 8th in the New York State League under Manager Tim Shinnick, 44.0 games out of 1st place. Ilion finished behind fellow league members Albany Senators, Binghamton Bingoes, Cortland/Waverly Wagonmakers, Rome Romans, Schenectady Electricians, Troy Trojans and Utica Pent-Ups. Ilion played home games at Russell Park. The New York State League became a Class B league in 1902. The 1902 Ilion Typewriters finished 59–47, 3rd in the New York State League under Manager Howard Earl. Ilion was 9.5 games behindthe 1st place Albany Senators. Ilion Continued play in the 1903 Class B New York State League. Under Manager Howard Earl, the Typewriters finished 7th with a 52–73 record, 24.5 games behind the league champion Schenectady Frog Alleys. Playing under Manager Jack Sharrott, the 1904 Ilion Typewriters finished 3rd in the New York State League. With a 75–56 record, Ilion finished 14.0 games behind the 1st place Syracuse Stars in the New York State League standings. The Ilion Typewriters franchise did not return to the New York State League after the 1904 season, with the franchise replaced by the Wilkes-Barre Barons in the eight–team league. Ilion joined the Independent Empire State League for the 1905 season. However, the Ilion franchise relocated to Fulton, New York on July 10, 1905. The Ilion/Fulton team finished 20–39 overall, 6th in the 1905 Empire State League. Minor league baseball has not returned to Ilion.
The ballpark
Ilion teams played at Russell Park. The ballpark was located on Warren Road in Ilion, New York. A modern Russell Park is still in existence today as a public park, it is located at Frederick Street and Parks Street in Ilion, New York.
