Indigenous police in Canada

Indigenous Police in Canada are police forces responsible for public order on First Nations across Canada.

History

The Canadian federal government created First Nations police forces to provide greater sensitivity to the needs and issues of policing in First Nations communities. Past conflicts, including some resulting in deaths of Indigenous citizens, have created tension between non-Indigenous police forces and Ingenious peoples. In 1993, the First Nations Chiefs of Police Association was created to co-ordinate input from other police forces in dealing with aboriginal policing issues.
