Sachs was born in Memphis, Tennessee. His films include The Delta, Forty Shades of Blue, Married Life, Keep the Lights On, and Love Is Strange. His newest film, Little Men, premiered at Sundance in 2016.
Sachs is Jewish and openly gay. He described Keep the Lights On as semi-autobiographical film. In January 2012, Sachs married artist Boris Torres in New York city, a few days before their twins, Viva and Felix, were born.
