Uruguay is the most secularized nation in all of the Americas with the highest percentage of atheists and agnostics. 17.2% of the population is atheist or agnostic according to the Uruguayan census. According to a study by Kauffman, in 2010 47% of the Uruguayan population is defined not religious. The figures for atheism and irreligion in Uruguay are higher than any other country in the Western Hemisphere. According to a study by CID-Gallup in 2012, Uruguay is the sixth least religious country in the world, only behind countries such as the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Japan and China.
