Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione


The "Alessandro Faedo" Institute of Information Science and Technologies is an institute of the Italian National Research Council. The Institute is located in the CNR Research Area of Pisa.
The Institute was founded in 2002 as a merge of two previous CNR institutes: CNUCE and the Istituto di Elaborazione dell’Informazione.
The institute is named in honor of Alessandro Faedo, President of CNR and former rector of the University of Pisa for his important contributions to the development of Computer Science in Italy. The mission of the institute is producing scientific excellence and to playing an active role in technology transfer in the field of Computer Science.
In 2016 the research staff of the institute counts more than 160 researchers, technologists, PhD students, and post-doctoral fellows.

The institute published 121 journal and 151 conference papers in 2016; it is responsible of design and implementation of more than thirty software packages and tools, like, for example, the open source molecular visualization software QuteMol and the 3D mesh processing system MeshLab.
