JNR Class D62


The Class D62 is a type of 2-8-4 wheel arrangement steam locomotive built by the Japanese National Railways in 1950 and 1951.
20 Class D62s were rebuilt from the earlier Class D52, which had a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement. Following the launch of the Class D62, other 2-8-2 locomotives were also converted to 2-8-4, becoming Class D60 and Class D61, respectively. They were numbered D62 1-D62 20 were renumbered D62 1-D62 20 between 1950 and 1951 rebuilt by the JNR Hamamatsu Works in 1950 and 1951 they were retired in 1966. And all were retired and cut up for scrap in 1966. None of the D62 2-8-4 Berkshires were preserved however a wheel from D62 10 is placed in the garden of the Late Model Railroader Kiyo Yamasaki it is unknown where the wheel of D62 10 is located today.

No examples of the class have been preserved.
