Joe Wilson (footballer, born 1884)

Joseph Wilson was an English professional footballer who played as a centre half in the Football League for Blackburn Rovers. He also played for Brighton & Hove Albion and Millwall of the Southern League, and played for that league's representative team.

Life and career

Wilson was born in Wigan, Lancashire, in 1884. He played football for Wigan United and Darwen before signing for Blackburn Rovers in April 1905 for a £125 fee. He made 42 appearances in the First Division, mostly in his second season, before spending the 1908–09 Southern League season with Brighton & Hove Albion. He missed two months with injury, but still played 35 matches in all competitions, and moved on to another Southern League club, Millwall. He made well over 200 Southern League appearances for Millwall, captained the team, and was selected for the league's representative team to face the Scottish League XI in 1910. In 1920, he moved on, to a season captaining Central League club Rochdale before joining Fleetwood of the Lancashire Combination as player-coach in 1921.
