John Gerard Noonan


John Gerard Noonan is an American bishop. He is the fifth bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orlando.
Since the 1970s he has lived in Florida except for when he earned a master's degree in education at Boston College.

Life and ministry

Early life and education

Noonan was born in Limerick, Ireland. He parents were John Noonan and Margaret Purcell.
Noonan graduated from St. John Vianney College Seminary in 1979. He earned a BA. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach in 1983. In 1996, he earned a Master of Education from Boston College.

Ordination and ministry

Noonan was ordained a priest on September 23, 1983, at St. Paul of the Cross Church, North Palm Beach. He was then assigned as parochial vicar at St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Pompano Beach while also serving as the chaplain for youth ministry in Broward County. He was then made Dean of Men at St. John Vianney College Seminary, then priest in residence at St. Rose of Lima in Miami Shores. He then become supervising principal at Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens and then supervising principal at St. Brendan High School in Miami. He served as rector/president of St. John Vianney College Seminary from 1996 until 2005.

Auxiliary Bishop of Miami

On June 21, 2005, Noonan was appointed as Titular Bishop of Bonusta and auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami. He was consecrated a bishop on August 24, 2005, at the Cathedral of Saint Mary in Miami. His principal consecrator was Archbishop John Clement Favalora and his co-consecrators were Bishop Agustin Alejo Roman Rodriguez and Bishop Felipe de Jesús Estévez.

Bishop of Orlando

On October 23, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Noonan as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Orlando.
