John Hungerford (congressman)


John Pratt Hungerford was an 18th- and 19th-century politician and lawyer from Virginia.

Biography

Born in Leeds, Virginia, Hungerford received an elementary education under private teachers as a child. He studied law and was admitted to the bar. He served in the Revolutionary War and later became a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, serving from 1797 to 1801 and from there to the Virginia State Senate, serving from 1801 to 1809 and was a Democratic-Republican member elect in the United States House of Representatives in 1811. He was later elected to the House in 1812, serving from 1813 to 1817. Hungerford served in the War of 1812 as a brigadier general of militia and later returned to the House of Delegates, serving again from 1823 to 1830. He died at "Twiford" in Westmoreland County, Virginia on December 21, 1833 and was interred in Hungerford Cemetery in Leedstown, Virginia.
