John Woods (baseball)
John Fulton "Abe" Woods was a professional baseball pitcher. He appeared in one game in Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox during the 1924 season. Listed at 6' 0",., Woods batted and threw right-handed. A native of Princeton, West Virginia, he attended West Virginia University, where he played college baseball for the Mountaineers from 1920-1923.
On September 16, 1924, he pitched one shutout inning of relief against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park, although he walked three of the six batters he faced. He did not have a decision and never appeared in a major league game again.
Woods went on to become Chief of Police in Norfolk, Virginia in March 1938.
Woods died on October 4, 1946 at age 48 in Norfolk, Virginia when he accidentally drove his squad car into the back of a stopped tow vehicle on a dark Cottage Toll Road.
