Kansk (air base)


Kansk-Dalniy is an air base in Russia located 9 km south of Kansk. It is a fighter base with about 10 remote revetments.

Station history

Up until 2009, Kansk was home to the 712 IAP flying MiG-17 aircraft during the 1970s, MiG-25, Su-15 aircraft during the 1980s and MiG-31 aircraft during the 1990s. In 2009 the regiment was retitled the 6979th Air Base.
An old 2000m runway, with no taxiways, exists between the city and airfield.
In December 2012, six modernized fighter jets MiG-31BM entered service with the Kan Air Group. Aviation Group "Kansk" is on combat duty for air defense of administrative, industrial and military facilities in its area of responsibility.
Previously, the regiment consisted of MiG-15, MiG-17 and Su-15TM. The 712 th Guviap fought in World War II, first on I-16 fighters and then on La-5. Before World War II, the regiment was based in the Far East and took part in border conflicts.
From the mid-1980s until 1994, the airfield was based on 15 OASO, armed with the Tupolev amphibian, Mi-8T, An-12BP.
Until the mid-1990s, the 662nd training regiment of the 22nd school of air gunners-radio operators,, which was armed with aircraft L-39, An-2, was also based on the airfield., An-24 HRV.
The now inactive Runway 2000 meters long is located between the city and the airfield.
