Ken Gowers


J. Kenneth "Ken" Gowers was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. He played at representative level for Great Britain, England and English League XIII, and at club level for Newbold Intermediates ARLFC and Swinton, as a goal-kicking, i.e. number 1, and occasionally, i.e. number 7.

Background

Ken Gowers was born in Wigan, Lancashire, England, he was the son of the rugby league, and association footballer; Walter Gowers, and the maternal grandfather of the Middlesex County Cricket Club cricketer; John Simpson, and he died aged 81 in Bury, Greater Manchester, his funeral took place at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Peter Street, Bury at 10.30am on Monday 6 November 2017, followed by a wake at Woodbank Cricket Club, Stafford Street, Bury.

Playing career

International honours

Ken Gowers won a cap for England while at Swinton in 1962 against France, and won caps for Great Britain while at Swinton in 1962 against France, in 1963 against France, and Australia, in 1964 against France, in 1965 against New Zealand, and in 1966 against France, and on the 1966 Great Britain Lions tour against Australia, and New Zealand. Gowers was the tourists' vice-captain on the 1966 Great Britain tour of Australasia.
Four Swinton players took part in the 1966 Great Britain Lions tour to Australasia, they were; Alan Buckley, Ken Gowers, Dave Robinson and John Stopford.
Ken Gowers played for English League XIII while at Swinton in the 8–26 defeat by France on Saturday 22 November 1958 at Knowsley Road, St. Helens.
