The Canadian Soccer League was a semi-pro soccer league. In 1991 the Kitchener Spirit paid an average salary of $8,000/season to their players. After incurring major losses in their inaugural season, the team's payroll was shrunken from its 1990 $220,000 to about $125,000 for the newly named Kickers.
