Kottaimedu Mosque, Coimbatore


Kottaimedu Mosque or Kottai Hidayathul Islam Safia Jamath Mosque is located at Kottaimedu within the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu in India. The mosque is known to have been built by Tipu Sultan in the year 1776.

This mosque is located at Kottaimedu within the Coimbatore city and 1 km away from Coimbatore railway station.

History

In 1776, the mosque was built by Tipu Sultan. Later it was damaged during the British rule.
The current mosque building renovated in 1901. Alhaj Mohammed Pillai Rowther, most popularly known as 'Aajiyar Valiyappa' renovated and elaborated the mosque through his own assets.
The 1921 Malabar Rebellion freedom fighters who fought against the Britishers and sacrificed their lives were buried here.
