Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 59.5 square miles, of which, 55.8 square miles of it is land and 3.8 square miles of it is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,064 people, 418 households, and 318 families residing in the town. The population density was 19.1 people per square mile. There were 524 housing units at an average density of 9.4 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.65% White, 0.19% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.38% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population.
There were 418 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.6 males.
