Landkreis Allenstein


The district Allenstein was a Prussian County in East Prussia, which existed from 1818 to 1945. It was assigned to the newly formed Regierungsbezirk Allenstein in 1905.

History

In 1910, the district had a population of 57,919 of which 32,766 spoke Polish and 22,825 spoke German. In the East Prussian plebiscite of 1920, 86.53% of the voters in Landkreis Allenstein voted to remain in Germany and 13.47% voted to join Poland. In 1938, during Nazi rule, several place names in the district were changed to more Germanized ones. In the course of World War II, the district was occupied by the Soviet Red Army in spring 1945 and placed under Polish administration, in accordance with the Potsdam Agreement. The German residents of the district were expelled and only about 7% of the inhabitants, classified as autochthonous Poles were allowed to remain.
