Early career

Lawrie Minson is the son of Australian country music radio personality John Minson, who moved from Sydney to Tamworth in 1961 to work as an announcer/copywriter at Radio Station 2TM. Nicknamed ‘Hoedown Junior’ at Tamworth High School after his father’s country music radio show, Minson tried to distance himself from any connection to country music until age 20.
Minson's own music industry career commenced in 1979 by accompanying Buddy Williams on tour as a guitarist. Over the span of subsequent decades, Minson performed as part of the Lee Kernaghan touring band, and accompanied Jimmy Barnes, Ross Wilson, Slim Dusty, James Blundell, Troy Cassar-Daley, and Matt Scullion. In 1989, Minson contributed “When the Rain Tumbles Down in July” and a tribute to Tex Morton, “Murrumbidgee Jack” on an instrumental record album of Australian classics.

Minson won the following four Golden Guitar awards at various Tamworth Country Music Festivals...
At a totally separate industry event in 2005, Minson and Lindsay Butler shared a Stan Coster Memorial Bush Ballad Award for a Duo with “When the Rain Tumbles Down in July”
