Liepupe (river)


Liepupe is a river in Latvia. It is Vidzeme coastal river in the Salacgrīva and Limbažu municipalities. River source is in the Virbotne forest west of Riebezer, it then flows along the Metsepole Plain and :lv:Piejūras zemiene|Piejūras Lowlands. At the :lv:Prinkas|Prinkas village on :lv:Liepupes-Reiņupes kanāls|Liepupe-Reynupe Canal, which connects Liepupe with :lv:Vitrupe|Vitrupe. The last 3 km of the river has a large relative fall and flows into Gulf of Riga at :lv:Lembuži|Lembuži. Coastal settlements on the river are Liepupe and :lv:Jelgavkrasti|Jelgavkrasti. The river is crossed by the highway Via Baltica. The German name "Pernigele" comes from the Liv language. In Liv language, Pärn - linden, joug - river, stream, i.e. - Liepu River - Liepupe.
