Lillian Osborne High School


Lillian Osborne High School is a high school located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in the Terwillegar community. The school is operated by the Edmonton Public School System, and it offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for students, including: International Baccalaureate, Fine Arts, Athletics, and Leadership Programs. Lillian Osborne, named after Edmonton's first female school teacher, is the newest public high school in Edmonton. The school serves the south west area of Edmonton.

Academics

International Baccalaureate Program

Lillian Osborne is one of several schools in the district offering an International Baccalaureate diploma program. Lillian Osborne has one of the highest IB participant rates in the city of Edmonton.

Leadership

Lillian Osborne's Leadership 15 is a mandatory course for all grade 10s. Students are taught many skills including speaking skills, teamwork skills, and listening skills. Optional grade 11 and 12 courses are offered through leadership 25/35. These courses are done by over 60 students.

Athletics

Lillian Osborne has teams for:
Soccer, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Basketball, Football, Badminton, Golf, Swim, Curling, Track & Field and Handball. Additional sports teams are expected to be created as the school develops.

Extracurricular Student Activities

Lillian Osborne has over 30 running clubs. Clubs are a huge part of Lillian life, and most are student run. Clubs at Lillian include: Terwilligar Interact Club, a UNICEF Club, New Chapter's Foundation, Leo’s Club, Minions, Gay Straight Alliance, Muslim Club, Improv Club, Ping Pong Club, Robotics Club, Theater Tech Club, Model UN, Random Acts of Kindness, and many more.

Debate Team

In 2014, Lillian Osborne's Debate team swept regionals, winning in both categories and sent more teams than any other school in the province to Provincials. Lillian Osborne also won Best Debate Team in Alberta 2013-2014.

Student Council

Student Council at Lillian is responsible for creating events throughout the year including: Welcome-Week, Hallo-Week, Winter-Week, LOHS dance, Touch of Class, Lillian Osborne Rockathon, and Culturama. Student Council is made up of around 28 students who are selected through an interview process, and an elected president and vice president.

Fine Arts

The school has a jazz band, concert band, musical theatre, visual arts, drama, graphic design, animation, and photography programs. The musical theatre class performed Alice in Wonderland and the open drama production performed Peter Pan in 2010. In 2011 the musical theatre class performed The Wiz and the open drama production performed the Hunchback of Notre Dame in April. The various bands perform and have concerts nights at the school frequently. One of the highlights of the Arts Season is the Annual ArtsFest, which is a year-end celebration of the works produced by Lillian Osborne students in their studies.

Expansion

In February 2014, the province announced that they would be putting money in place to expand Lillian Osborne High school to go from a capacity of 1000 to 1600. The architect firm that built the original building was returned to design an expansion. In October 2014, plans were released to the public.
This expansion included:
a second gymnasium, another wing of the school with over 14 new classrooms and 6 new science labs, an extra CTS wing, and a theater with over 300 seats. This expansion was completed in 2017.
