The Shape of Water is a 2017 American romantic dark fantasy film directed and produced by Guillermo del Toro. Written by del Toro and Vanessa Taylor, the film stars Sally Hawkins as a mute custodian at a high-security government laboratory during the Cold War in Baltimore, where she befriends a captured humanoid-amphibian sea creature. Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer feature in supporting roles.
The Shape of Water premiered at the 74th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2017, where it won the Golden Lion. The Shape of Water received acclaim, with many critics declaring it del Toro's best film since Pan's Labyrinth, and particularly praising Hawkins's performance.
