List of ethnic origins of New Zealanders

In the most recent New Zealand census in 2013, 74 percent of the population identified as European and 14.9 percent as Māori. Other major pan-ethnic groups include Asians and Pacific peoples. Middle Eastern, Latin American and African ethnicities constitute a small remainder of the population. When completing the census people could select more than one ethnic group and this list includes all of the stated ethnic groups if more than one is chosen.
New Zealand's ethnic diversity can be attributed to its history and location. For example, the country's colonisation by Britain is a significant reason for the majority of its population being of European descent.

Terminology

The New Zealand census invites respondents to identify with an ethnic group; in practice "ethnicity" is often conflated with race and ancestry.
Statistics New Zealand maintains the national classification standard for ethnicity. At the top level, there are six major ethnic groupings:
People who state a nationality without further defining their ethnicity are placed in the ethnic group that matches the nationality. This may lead to some people being categorised incorrectly, such as non-white Americans being placed in the European category.
Many respondents identify with multiple ancestries.

Ethnicities

Ethnicities recorded in the 2006 and 2013 New Zealand censuses. Only ethnicities with 1,000 or more responses at the 2013 census are included individually:
