List of medical colleges in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, a medical school is known as a medical college. Allopathic and Alternative Medicine related medical education at the graduate level is provided by medical colleges. The colleges are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and are affiliated with a university on the respective region. They however have to be recognized after meeting a set criterion by a central regulatory authority called Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. 1986, all the medical colleges were established by the government. Since then, several private medical colleges have been set up.At present there are total 112 recognized medical colleges in Bangladesh, 36 of which are public and 70 private. Apart from these, there are six medical colleges which are run by the Bangladesh Armed Forces and are under the Ministry of Defence.
At present in Government medical college MBBS student seat is about 4203,in Private medical college MBBS student seat is about 6040 and in Army control medical college MBBS seat is about 375,every year this number is changing.
All the medical colleges award the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. The Doctor of Medicine or Master of Surgery is awarded as a postgraduate research degree in selected medical colleges and universities, following the medical tradition of Commonwealth countries. As per the declaration of overseas registration of the General Medical Council, the awarded MBBS degree from some of the institutions is eligible to apply for registration in United Kingdom.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University is the first medical university in Bangladesh. It offers only postgraduate degrees.
In the 2016 law, the law of establishing Chittagong Medical University was enacted in 17th of the law. Then all the procedures for establishing medical universities started. On 17 May 2017, the recruitment process of VC officially started. In the continuation of his academic year, MBBS students are admitted under Chittagong Medical University. These students were earlier admitted under Chittagong University.
The administrative and academic activities of Rajshahi Medical University were officially started in the temporary office in 2017.
Rajshahi Medical University was established with the objective of rapid implementation of education and medical activities and all government and private medical colleges, dental colleges, nursing colleges or institutes of Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna divisions under the supervision of Medical University and proper supervision.
