Liz Adekunle


Elizabeth Adekunle is a British Anglican priest. Since 2016, she has served as Archdeacon of Hackney in the Diocese of London.

Biography

Adekunle was born in North London, England. She studied theology at the University of Birmingham, graduating with a Bachelor of Theology degree. She went on to complete two Master of Arts degrees: she studied African Christianity and development at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; and pastoral care and counselling at Ridley Hall, Cambridge while also training for ordination.
She was ordained in the Church of England in 2007. From 2007 to 2011, she was curate and then priest-in-charge at St Luke's Church, Hackney in Homerton, London. During this time she was also a chaplain at Homerton Hospital and St Mellitus College. From 2011 to 2016, she was chaplain of St John's College, Cambridge.
On 1 July 2015, Adekunle was announced as the next Archdeacon of Hackney in the Diocese of London, in succession to Rachel Treweek. She was collated as archdeacon on 5 April 2016.
