According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 24.7 square miles, of which 24.2 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles is water. It is drained by the Delaware River, which forms its eastern and southern boundary and separates it from New Jersey. Its villages include Gruvertown, Martins Creek, Mount Pleasant, and Riverton. Route 611 crosses it north-to-south on its path between Portland and Easton.

At the 2000 census, there were 3,228 people, 1,223 households and 900 families residing in the township. The population density was 133.5 per square mile. There were 1,347 housing units at an average density of 55.7/sq mi. The racial makeup of the township was 98.30% White, 0.68% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.99% of the population. There were 1,223 households, of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% were married couplesliving together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.09. 24.3% of the population were under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 105.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.8 males. The median household income was $51,568 and the median family income was $56,553. Males had a median income of $41,164 vcompared with $26,563 for females. The per capita income for the township was $21,088. About 4.8% of families and 5.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.9% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.
