Lucia Kleinhans Mathews


Lucia Mathews was an American artist. A lifelong resident of California, she was the wife of artist Arthur Frank Mathews.

Biography

Lucia was born in San Francisco, California on 29 August 1870. Interested in art from a young age, she enrolled in the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. While studying there she met her future husband, Arthur Frank Mathews, a teacher whom had recently returned to California from Paris. The two were married in 1894. Working in collaboration with her husband, Lucia became one of the first practitioners of Arts and Crafts movement. She, along with her husband, is often considered one of leading artists of the California Decorative Style.
