Lynnville was platted in 1839. The town was named for its founder, John Lynn, who also established the first store at the site. A post office has been in operation at Lynnville since 1839.

The racial makeup of the town was 98.9% White, 0.1% African American, 0.2% Native American, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population. There were 352 households, of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couplesliving together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.1% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.03. The median age in the town was 38.9 years. 24.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.4% were from 25 to 44; 27.9% were from 45 to 64; and 13.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 52.0% male and 48.0% female.

There were 346 households, out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 28.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.78. In the town, the population was spread out, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older.
